The problem with school holidays is that little boys get bored staying at home and when they get bored, they get up to all kinds of mischief. The temptation to keep them out of trouble with an iPad or the idiot box becomes all most too great to resist so the only answer is to get out of the house and find something for them to do. So this was where we went one of those days…
Dinoscovery @ Discoveria in Avenue K
Anticipating a crowd, I bought tickets online only to discover when we got there that we had the exhibition almost entirely to ourselves. It was great. We should do more stuff like this during school holidays…
The exhibition is pretty small and we got through the whole thing in less than an hour. Fortunately, there were lots of activities to occupy the boys so we ended up staying for over two hours. I suspect that the boys would have been content to linger if we didn’t have to go off to lunch. Although they do have a cafe serving food, my xenophobic G2 was having none of that so we had to hunt for alternatives.
Activities at Dinoscovery
There is actually quite a fair bit to do. In the foyer, there are three activities to occupy the kids:
1. Lead a Dino
Help the dinosaurs navigate through the maze to the other side.
2. Know Your Dino
Identify the dinosaurs and match the pictures to their names.
3. Build a Dino
Construct the dinosaur picture from the giant puzzle blocks.
Inside the exhibition, everyone receives a paleontologist vest, a headlight, a special wristband, and a map. After watching a quick introduction video on the “dos” and “don’ts”, you have to navigate through the exhibits to identify specific dinosaurs and paste the relevant sticker on your map. Identify all the dinosaurs correctly to be awarded a “Junior Paleontologist” certificate.
Along the way, you can take on some challenges:
1. Tail Shake
Strap on the ankylosaurus’ tail and see how much damage you can cause against a “T-Rex”.
2. Wall Climb
There is a mini wall with autobelays where you can try your hand at indoor rock climbing.
3. Race a Therapod
So you think you run fast? See how you measure up against a therapod.
4. Photo Ops:
- Ride a T-Rex
- Sit in a Pteranodon nest
5. Dino Shooting Range
The flies are annoying the herbivores. How good a shot are you? See if you can shoot the annoying insects off the backs of the resting herbivores…
6. Ball Popping Volcano
Feed the volcano and watch as it erupts with lava balls.
7. Dino Dig
Search for fossils at the dinosaur dig. G2 spent most of his time here. He probably would have been happy to continue playing in the sand all afternoon if I hadn’t insisted on going off for lunch.
Watch the 3D docu-drama about dinosaurs and how they became extinct. Try to get a seat nearer to the front because the glasses don’t work when you’re sitting too far back.
