Educational Apps for Toddlers and Pre-Schoolers

Following are some terrific apps from 22learn for the iPad (I think some available on iPhone and iPod Touch) that are appropriate for toddlers and pre-schoolers. 22learn have 20 years of experience in the design of fun educational tools. Their apps have all be beta tested by children from their intended age group. They currently have 30 educational apps for the iPad (and counting as they are adding new apps all the time). Many of these apps are available as a “lite” trial version so you can “try before you buy”.

Here are some of the apps that Hercules (2 years old) enjoys playing with:

To keep children motivated, the best score is calculated at the end of the game, so that children can aim to better their scores. Scores are saved in their personal Hall of Fame. Game mode has two levels to accommodate younger children. The easier level requires children to familiarise with the word by matching the same words.

1. Matching Pictures – match the right animal picture to its shadow by dragging it onto the appropriate window. Each correct response will receive enthusiastic feedback from the monkey, the card will enlarge itself, and the animal will make its sound. Score is progressively calculated, with more points for answering several times correctly in a row. The game ends after three sets of rounds composed of four pairs of animals each.

2. Bingo! – aim of the game is to tap on the picture of the animal that was pronounced. Difficulty can be varied in settings.

3. Find Me! – The task is to uncover the whole picture by dragging the animal picture displayed in the bottom right corner onto its written name. Once you make the correct match, a part of a hidden picture will be displayed as a reward! Difficulty can be adjusted in settings.

4. Animatch! – the classic memory game where you need to tap on one card and uncover another card with the same picture. The goal is to match all cards. The name of the animal is always read aloud, so that children can better memorize the animal names. Difficulty can be adjusted in settings.

Abby – Basic Skills Preschool: Things That Go Together and Shapes HD

Full version contains:

Abby Basic Skills 11. Letters – Tap on the word that starts with the letter that was pronounced.

2. Counting – Count the toys. Hearing the counting pronounced helps children to better remember the order of the numerals as well as get used to the counting procedure.

3. Sizes – Train the skills of understanding the comparative nature of concepts of big, small and the same.

4. Puzzles – Fix the broken toy. Puzzles mode enables your children to train fine motor skills and improve their logical thinking skills when they need to realise the correct position of each puzzle and understand how they make a whole.

Abby Basic Skills 25. Shadows – Drag the object to its silhouette!

6. Matching – Match the toys. Matching game serves to train children’s memory and understanding of the concept of the same. Children need to match in total four pairs of toys.

7. Colours – The task is to tap on the toy that is painted in a certain colour. The task is made slightly easier by the fact that the name of the color is always written on the top of the screen, making the activity great for children just beginning to learn about colours.

8. Shapes – Shapes is an activity designed to teach children the names of common shapes (such as a square, rectangle, or triangle).

9. Patterns – This activity gives children practice in the area of common patterns recognition. Task is to drag the object that completes the toy pattern into its correct place.

10. Same and Different – This game tests the ability of comparing pictures and finding differences. Task is either to select the different toy among several others, or to find the same toy as the displayed one.

Abby’s Toys – Games For Kids HD

Full version contains:

1. Find me! – Can you find the toy according to the pronounced instructions? The task is always to tap on the right toy.

2. Magic Toys! – The task is to catch all toys and match them to their correct silhouette.

3. Hidden Toys – An evil fairy put a spell on all toys. Can you choose the right toy according to the instructions? This game can be modified, so that the toy is to be identified only on the basis of its written name — in the default mode, the name is pronounced aloud with the written name placed in the background to encourage association of the written form with the pronounced one, but also to enable the child to solve the problem without any knowledge of letters.

4. Learning – A free mode without any instructions when children can interact with toys. With each tap on a toy, a toy makes a sound or a little animation, and its name is pronounced to improve children’s vocabulary.
