Our second trial activity was a cooking class at Young Chef’s Academy (the first was a gymnastics class at Fly Kidz). Since Gavin loves cooking, I figured this would be a hit for him and it was – sort of. Here are the details…
Young Chef’s Academy is an American franchise. They offer cooking classes for children as young as 3 years old and cater for students up to 17 years old. They have three programs:
- Kinder Cooks (3-5 year olds)
- Junior Chefs (6-11 year olds)
- Senior Chefs (12-17 year olds)
Classes are held weekly with 4 classes each month. There is a new theme for each month and all recipes follow the theme. For example, last month was Italian month so they cooked Italian food.
The venue is spacious, bright and clean. There is also a play room with some toys and books so it wasn’t so tedious for Gareth while we waited for Gavin to finish his class. There is a good emphasis on hygiene and the children washed their hands each time before handling food. If they touch anything they aren’t supposed to, they are sent to wash their hands again.
Gavin participated in the Kinder Cooks program where the children are given the opportunity to do just about everything except stove-top cooking – which is better than Marche’s cooking class where only some children get to do the mixing of ingredients and where all the ingredients are already measured out prior to the commencement of class. They also give you a copy of the recipe at the end of the class so you can make it again at home. In Marche’s cooking class, they tell you the ingredients but there was no written recipe.
The maximum number in a Kinder Cooks class is 12 children. Parents do not accompany their children, but they can watch their child through the glass panels. In today’s class, there were four children and two teachers in the kitchen. The recipe for the day was Strawberry Short Cake. Although Gavin enjoyed the process of preparing it, he didn’t seem to enjoy eating it. According to him, he didn’t like the cream. But that didn’t deter him from wanting to sign up for classes, though.
I fear my suspicions about my son’s penchant for uniforms is proving to be true. While we were waiting for class to start, Gavin saw the “uniform” on display and started enquiring about it (what a long way he has come from the days when he refused to wear his Kinderland uniform). The uniform is a Young Chef’s Academy apron that your child will receive upon signing up for classes. It comes with your child’s name embroidered on it.
Registration: RM60 (includes apron with name embroidered and folder)
Classes: RM300/month (4 classes a month)
Fees include recipes and cost of ingredients, and the children get to take home what they make.
At present the only Kinder Cooks class available is on Sunday at 2pm, but they are planning to run more classes.
They also offer party packages with three themes to choose from: pizza, ice cream, or cupcakes. A great idea if you’re looking for a party with a difference for your child’s next birthday! The party runs for an hour and a half and caters for 20 children. It includes a surprise gift for the birthday child, recipe cards, invitations, party decorations, paper chefs hats, and finger food and drinks. You can also opt to add on the birthday cake, professional photography and refreshments for the parents.
Young Chef’s Academy is located in Desa Sri Hartamas on the third floor over looking the open-air car park (you can see their big sign board on display at the top of the shoplots).
