Educational Books: Usborne Internet-Linked Books

After getting Gavin the “100 Words I Love Reading Book and CD ROM Pack, I was quite keen to look for the 350 words and 800 words packs.  I went back to Kinokuniya too look for them and was disappointed to find they didn’t have them in stock.  What I did discover, though, was a whole new range of other cool books published by Usborne.  They are a series of short books that introduce a variety of interesting subjects to children, like Science, History, Music, Geography, Nature, etc.

Usborne History Usborne Geography

Usborne Science Usborne Music

They aren’t too pricey either – they cost about RM25 to RM30 a book, and they’re hard cover.  They are also “internet-linked”.  Throughout the book, they will refer you to their website which has a series of “quicklinks” to various internet sites relevant to the subjects discussed in the book.  These links will help your child find more information on that particular topic on the internet.

The good news is that quicklinks is free.  You don’t have to have the book to access the links.  I’ve been browsing through the site and it is a wealth of educational information suitable for children of all ages.  The only down side is that the links are listed by page number corresponding to the information in the book so you have to go through them page  by page if you’re looking for something specific.

The list of internet-linked Usborne books is enormous.  You could even start a library of Usborne books if you wanted to get them all.  I think the books are a great way to introduce new subjects to your child.  I’ve said it before that I believe it is important to expose to our children to as much as possible to help them discover their passion because a child with a passion not only has the potential to excel in life but enjoys what he learns.

  1. The only three schools to consider seriously in KL are Alice Smith, Garden international school and KL international school. The rest are just a waste of money. BSKL is too expensive and does not give good value for money. It had a head that suddenly left and I hear the new head there is not good. Teacher turnover is high indicating bad management.
