Review: I Love Reading Book and CD ROM Pack

These days, whenever we take Gavin out, it invariably involves a trip to the bookshop.  Gavin loves the bookshop.  He loves the bookshop so much, he would do just about anything to score a visit.  That’s more than we can say for the toy shop.  In Hartamas Shopping Complex, there is a Times Book Store right opposite Toys ‘R’ Us.  These days Gavin always asks to go to Times but he never asks to go to Toys ‘R’ Us.

Don’t get me wrong – I’m not complaining.  A trip to the bookshop is just as fascinating for me as it is for Gavin.  The creativity of the books these days is amazing.  There are so many books that I can’t wait to buy for Gavin just because they look so interesting and fun.  Educational books these days are so imaginative that I can’t imagine any child not wanting to learn.

During our most recent trip to Kinokuniya, I came across a book and CD ROM pack entitled “I Love Reading“:

It comes with four booklets and four corresponding CD ROMs that accompany the books.  They are short books that are designed not only to help children learn how to read but to learn interesting facts in science and nature.  Since it has always been my desire to inculcate a love for learning in my children and teach them to read at a young age, this series of booklets seemed just perfect.  The four book titles are:

  • Blast Off
  • Hungry Bugs
  • Snappy Sharks
  • Under the Sea

You can read the books with your child or you can play the CD ROM and click on the words to have them read aloud to your child.  This is what the book “Under the Sea” looks like on the computer:

The following is a short Youtube recording of how the book works on the computer:

The booklets contain vibrant photographs which you can enlarge on the computer using the “zoom in” function.  Each booklet teaches your child 100 new words.  It’s short and sweet which is a great way to help your child get started reading without overwhelming him.  The four booklets and CD ROMs cost RM65.75 at Kinokuniya but you can also purchase it on Amazon.

There are current three sets in the series of I Love Reading Books – 100 Words (I Love Reading Book and CD-ROM Packs), 350 Words (I Love Reading Book and CD-ROM Packs), and 800 Words (I Love Reading Book and CD-ROM Packs).  Gavin seems to be enjoying the set I bought so far so I’m tempted to purchase the other two sets in the series:

I love reading 350

Subjects:

  • Orangutan Family
  • Dinosaur Duel
  • Diggers and Trucks
  • Scary Snakes

I love reading 800

Subjects:

  • Rhinos in Danger
  • Elephants in Danger
  • Lions in Danger
  • Mountain Gorillas in Danger

I’ve decided that when it comes to Gavin, we’re going to have to use a multi-disciplinary approach to teaching him how to read.  Even if he doesn’t learn to read with these books, I’m sure he will learn a few new words.  At the very least, he will learn interesting new facts about the world around him.  Hopefully it trigger his interest to discover more.

  1. Hello everyone, glad I found this blog.
We have returned from Australia to Malaysia and surprised to see
    how international schools has mushroomed.
However, has anyone got more information
    on APIS?
