The progress so far…
Gavin has stopped all the flash cards. He isn’t interested – period. On occasion, when I bring out the cards for Gareth, he will tell me he wants to do them, too, and lie down beside his brother. Sometimes he recites the words after me, sometimes he just looks at them. Sometimes he distracts Gareth…
Gareth is in the sixties with the Math program and I just started addition with him today. We’re a little behind because I didn’t realise I was suppose to start the additions after we got through the first twenty dot cards. He’s learned all the words for “family members” and we’re progressing through “things around the house”, “colours” and “fruits and vegetables” at a nice rate.
Gareth seems to be enjoying the program. He is attentive every time I bring the cards out. It’s like there’s a magnet between his eyes and the cards the moment I hold them up – he can’t look away. Even if he does, the moment I switch to the next card, his eyes snap back. The only time I have difficulty holding his attention is when Gavin distracts him. Then again that’s probably my fault for showing him the flash cards whenever Gavin is around. I was trying to capitalise on the fact that Gavin wants to do whatever Gareth is doing and hoped that Gavin might learn something along the way.
Although Gavin loves books, I’ve been struggling to get him interested in learning how to read. But that’s another story altogether…
Math Program – Part 2a: Addition and Subtraction
According to How to Teach Your Baby Math, you are supposed to begin part 2 of the Math program once you have shown your baby the first twenty dot cards. I didn’t do my homework so we did get started until today.
The second part of the Math program involves teaching your baby equations. While you continue to introduce new dot cards to your baby on a daily basis, you can also start to include random addition equations using the first twenty dot cards. For instance: 9 dots plus 11 dots equals 20 dots.
On day one, prepare nine sets of equations and show three equations per session. For instance:
Session 1: 4+5=9; 7+8=15; 12+5=17
Session 2: 13+6=19; 2+16=18; 6+8=14
Session 3: 7+5=12; 16+3=19; 8+12=20
Avoid showing patterns such as 1+2; 1+3; 1+4, etc.
Continue showing three sessions of random sums per day for ten days then start introducing subtraction in the same manner using all the dot cards you have already introduced to your baby. By the time you start introducing subtraction, you should have introduced the first forty dot cards to your baby so you can create subtraction equations using all forty dot cards.
