Lifestyles of the Newly Rich

Cheryl eyed the breadmaker uncertainly.  “So you think I should get it?”  She asked doubtfully.

“Oh my god, girl!  I can’t believe you’re still deliberating!  Of course you should get it!  You deserve that treat!  Besides, you’re rich now.  You shouldn’t even be wasting you time pondering whether to get it or not.  Good grief!  If I had your money, I’d just spend without a second thought!”  Henrietta exclaimed.

“Well,” Cheryl hesitated.  “It just seems a little unnecessary.  I mean, I can make bread without one, so what’s the point?”

Henrietta shook her head as if to say she could not believe her girlfriend from childhood had lost her mind.  “My dear, you’re part of the rich and famous now.  The elite of elite.  If you want something, even if it’s just a whim, you get it.  People like you don’t have to think about stuff like this.”

“Still, I don’t think having money should be like that,” Cheryl frowned.  “I mean, it doesn’t matter how rich I am or whether I were the Queen of England, but I still think it’s in poor taste just to buy something for the sake of buying it.”

Henrietta groaned.  “Firstly, it’s just a breadmaker.  I’m sure you’ll use it at some point.  Secondly, you love to bake and you love bread so where’s the part about buying for the sake of buying?  You’ll use it.  Thirdly, if you were the Queen of England, you wouldn’t have to make your own bread.”

Cheryl finally picked up the breadmaker and made her way to the cashier.

“Finally!” Henrietta blurted impatiently.  “Now can we get to our spa appointment?”

Rich Man’s Folly

Sarah gazed out into the roaring ocean, watching the waves crash to shore as she inhaled deeply on a cigarette.  She stood on the balcony of her luxurious beachfront condominium wearing an organza negligee that left little to the imagination.  Although she did not know how long she had been there, she knew it must have been at least an hour because the sun appeared higher in the sky and the ashtray beside her was littered with cigarette butts she had discarded.

The sliding door behind her opened and she heard a deep, husky voice murmured appreciatively, “Mmmm, what a sight to behold.”

Sarah turned and exhaled a cloud of smoke in Jared’s direction.  She lounged lazily over the banister and peered at him through thick, dark lashes.  The ocean breeze ran through her long auburn tresses and created ripples through her neglige.  Jared advanced towards her and slipped an arm around her waist, resting his hand on the small of her back as he drew her into his embrace.  He kissed her passionately, then whispered into her ear, “How about a quickie for the road?”

Pushing him back, Sarah stepped away from his embrace.  “Later darling, I’ve got to get going to the office and stop that fool of a husband of mine from losing any more of the company’s money.”

“I always did wonder why you married him,” Jared said wistfully.  “We wouldn’t have had to sneak around like this if you’d married me instead.  Although I never thought Harold to be quite the fool you make him out to be.  He has made some astute business decisions on his own, you know.”

Sarah laughed scornfully.  “They were my business decisions.  I just let him take the credit for them.  As much as I would like my uncle to know what a fool he picked for me to marry, I’m not about to let my idiot husband run us down the drain.  No, I’ve worked too hard to lose the company now.”

“You must teach me, one of these days, how you managed to play the puppeteer for Harold, then,” Jared insisted.

“Oh Jared, Harold’s a weak-minded simpleton.  Manipulating him is child’s play.  Anyway, I’m going to get dressed.  I’ll see you back here tomorrow.”

Jared sighed. “Our trysts are too short, my love.”  He kissed her and made for one grope before releasing her.  Jared waited at the balcony until he heard the shower running before walking back into the apartment.  He dialled a number on his mobile phone and waited three rings before a voice came on at the other end.

“She’s going to override Harold’s decision.  You’d better get Darren to work on him to make sure she doesn’t succeed.  We may have to shift to plan B.  Sarah’s turning out to be far too capable a business woman.”

The woman’s voice on the other line replied, “Alright.  Mind that you don’t fall for her.  I’m hearing a little too much admiration in your tone of voice for my liking.”

“Ah my darling, you know I only have eyes for you,” Jared answered smoothly.

“Whatever,” came the curt response and the line went dead.

The Harry Potter Addiction

Ever since I can remember, I’ve been talking about writing a novel - never mind becoming a published writer!  Up until now, I’m afraid that all I’ve got to show for it is, well, zip.  Unless you count that manuscript I have been working on since I was a teenager, but even now I’d be hard pressed to tell you where it is.

Just to get the creative juices flowing, I started this blog as a way of encouraging me to write more.  I figured that if I just wrote whatever came to mind, I might be able to get something started online, maybe even come up with a great idea that will spark of a best selling novel.  Unfortunately, all I have is a blog with some rather weak ideas, at best.  I had been hoping to be inspired to write a creative masterpiece of the likes of JK Rowling.

Although I had originally started reading the Harry Potter series because I was curious to see what all the fuss was about, in the short span of seven books, I have become a die-hard Rowling’s fan.  With all the hype about children going ape over Harry Potter and then the cult following of adults, who could resist taking a peek?  I thought initially that if I read her books, some of her creativity might just rub off on me, instead, I got infected by the Harry Potter bug.

Not only have I become a Rowling’s fan, but I truly admire her writing.  In an earlier post, I mentioned that to write a best selling book, you either had to have a great idea or you had to be a great writer.  I believe that Rowling has both advantages.  She has created a magical world completely unlike any other fantasy book before it.  She also has a flare for writing that makes her books entertaining, humourous and difficult to put down.  I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed any book as much as her Harry Potter series.  The fact that I’m even bothering to reread the whole series again for the second time speaks volumes of the immense enjoyment I derived from reading them the first time.  There isn’t a single book that I have ever read twice (if you don’t count the books I read to my son) and it appears that her books are just as exciting on my second reading because I still can’t put them down even though I know what’s going to happen next.

Since I have the whole series of novels, I’m planning next to buy the box set of DVDs for Gavin when he grows up (still waiting for the final two movies to be made, of course).

Now if only I could come up with something as creative…
