After running for what seemed like hours, she stopped. Her legs felt like dead weights – she had been running slower and slower with each step until it felt like she was wading through water. It seemed as if she was going around and around in circles because she could feel him nearby but she could not see him.
Damn the red trees. They were playing mind games with her, hiding her brother from her when he needed her. Her heart was pounding wildly in her chest fighting to escape the confines of her rib cage. Although the Serpent had brought them nothing but back luck since the day it reared its ugly head from her brother’s back, they had to take care of it. The Serpent shared her brother’s life blood. If it died, her brother could soon die with it.
Where was he? Her brother was the only familiar person in this uncanny world and she needed him to reassure her just as he had always done so when they were children. If she could just find him, everything would be all right.
And then she saw it – a small opening hidden by the brush. Her brother was there.
