And the topic for the day is: “Start at Traffic School. See where that takes you.”
I admit, I’m a little bit of a hermit, even in the blogosphere, but I did take a peek out there today and this is what I saw:
Bloggers Sued in Malaysia
Injunction
The contentious blogs under scrutiny are Rock Bru and Screenshots. Although I’ve generally stayed away from political media, I can’t say I’m totally ignorant of the fact that “freedom of speech” in Malaysia has always been a bit of a farce. Many of us share our opinions among close circles of friends, never really making an overt stand to be too vocal about our deepest personal thoughts. Some of the bolder ones, however, have begun to share their opinions online, especially with the advent of blogging and the sudden rush of its popularity on the net.
The hubby, who used to practice as a lawyer, has always cautioned me never to be too vocal about such issues online. Even if I have had complaints on customer services provided by various establishments, he has always been reluctant to allow me to vent the full extent of my displeasure online. Well, I never thought one could really be sued for writing about the truth or what we believe to be the truth, but it seems the lawyer stands correct.
To be aware that blogs with outspoken posts dealing with contentious issues can result in “expensive litigation that can cripple the ordinary blogger” ought to be enough to make any Malaysian blogger tremble even in the blogosphere of seemingly nebulous identities.
The outcome of this legal battle remains to be seen, however, one can’t help but wonder how two ordinary individuals can stand up against the might of a national newspaper and several high-ranking individuals.
