We departed the groom’s house after lunch and arrived at the hotel in time for me to have a quick shower and remove my hair and make-up before the ladies return to “fix me up” for the evening events.

By 4pm, we were in readiness for the blessing service that would take place in one of the rooms opposite the Grand Mahkota Ballroom (where the dinner reception was to be held).

With everyone seated inside, the best man and the matron of honour enter first to light the two unity candles. There are three unity candles - two which represent the bride and groom before marriage and the third to signify their union as one.

After the lighting of the candles, the procession follows. The groom and his best man walk in first, followed by my matron of honour. My parents and I are the last to enter.

Our wedding planner, Stephen Foong had done a fantastic job with the service up until the moment I walked in. I had always had the impression that they would be playing Pachebel’s Canon in D for our walk-in. Instead, I was greeted by Stephen Foong’s crooning rendition of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy from his ninth symphony. It was not that Stephen was off key when he sang, but let’s just say that he would be better off if he stuck to his day job and leave it at that.

The pastor gave a very witty and enlightening lesson before handing the mic over to my brother to read the following verse from the bible:

Mark - Chapter 10:6-9

6. “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female’.
7. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife;
8. And the two will become one flesh; so they are no longer two, but one.
9. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”

Following that, we had the exchange of vows and the rings and C could officially “kiss the bride”. We completed the ceremony by lighting the central unity candle with our two individual candles and blowing out the individual candles.

I liked the symbology behind that. It fits so well with the whole ceremony and the verse from the Bible.

Four voices like angles completed this beautiful ceremony as they sang acapella for us - what a lovely gift from AC and her sisters.
