Some time back I got a Vita-Mix and started a whole foods diet with it - well, a partial whole foods diet anyway. I would make myself a fruit/veggie smoothie for breakfast and a pre-dinner juice almost everyday. Before that I was barely eating fruits, unlike when I lived with my parents in Australia where fruits were a daily affair. The Vita-Mix seriously makes it easy to consume the recommended dietary intake of fruits and vegetables.
Some of the fruits and vegetables that I have been adding to my smoothies are: apples, bananas, strawberries, blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, oranges, grapes, celery, carrots, avocados, pears, plums, pineapples, passion fruit and cherries. I’ve also been making smoothies with milk, yoghut and oats. Recently, I saw frozen blackberries in the supermarket and have been wondering about whether to add them to my daily fruit mix. My whole foods living book doesn’t really contain much information about the health benefits of blackberries, although I’m sure it must be a great source of antioxidants.
Anyway, I decided to do a little background check this on the blackberry and this is what I’ve discovered - blackberries are:
- amongst the fruits with the highest fiber content
- great source of Vitamin A, potassium, calcium
- rich in antioxidants, therefore anti-cancer
- they are highly nutritious fresh, canned or snap frozen so I don’t necessarily have to grow my own Blackberry plants to benefit from them
- other potential medical benefits are protecting against lung inflammation, inhibition of blood clotting, endotoxin shock, heart diseases, diabetes and age-related cognitive decline
Hmmm… maybe I should start buying blackberries after all.
