Given a choice, I would opt to have a separate media room for watching TV, movies and playing games (such as the Wii or Playstation). However, I realise that a lot of homes don’t cater for such spacious luxuries and often have the TV and living area combined. If you’re lucky, you might have a separate formal dining and lounge with the family living area at the back, but for most apartment living, the family room and formal areas are usually combined into one.
With the latter, there is a new design of furniture that can help you maintain the image of a formal area which can be converted to your family living room once the guests have left. A tv lift cabinet can hide your TV, DVD player and Wii or Playstation console when entertaining guests. Once the guests have gone, you can turn your formal living back into the family room. Not a bad concept in homes where space is a constraint.
