One of the biggest shocks of returning to Malaysia is the lack of customer service in the manner that business is done here. Perhaps it’s just a lack of tact or maybe it’s a cunning sales tactic to insult your customers, I really don’t know.
For instance, my SIL was shopping for handcream for me one day and suddenly the salesgirl peers into her face and says, “Wah! Your face got a lot of blackheads, lah! I recommend this treatment for it – you want?”
I wonder if the idea is to scare the customers into getting treatment for their “problem”? Honestly, I can’t really say it would have worked with me, though. If I had been my SIL, I would have handed back the handcream and walked away.
Another instance was when I was buying ice cream from Baskin Robbins. For some reason, the guy behind the counter thought I had asked for two single scoop cups. Now I always order a double scoop. Regardless of whether he heard me wrong or I asked for the wrong thing, I am the customer so he should oblige me. Instead, he stood there arguing with me about whether I said double or single. I couldn’t believe it – do you want my business or not?
I honestly don’t know how these people expect to survive or are consumers here just generally extremely lenient to poor customer service?
