Just What I Think - If You Care to Read About It

Blog Photo Hosting Sites

May 3rd, 2007 · 2 Comments

Since my SIL told me that she really disliked blog sites that used slideshows because it takes a long time to upload for people who don’t have fast connections, I decided it was time to look for another photo hosting site. I’m afraid I’m one of those people who love slideshows and one of my favourite photo tools is Slide, as you will notice from my other blogs (Getting Hitched, Baby’s Diary, Figur8).

To date, I’ve only used Photobucket, Flickr, and Webshots, so let me share with you my experiences with each of these photo sites.

I discovered Photobucket because it is affiliated with Blogdrive. It is the first photo hosting site I’ve ever used and I find it quite user friendly. My only gripes with it is that I have trouble if I have a lot of photos to upload. Although they recommend using Flock to upload lots of photos at one time, it never seemed to work very well for me so I gave up on Flock. I also found that Photobucket was always very slow to load and sometimes the site would be down when I need to use it.

Figur8 has a lot of examples of Photobucket photos in use.

I came across Flickr while I was surfing on the net one day and signed up for an account. I never really used the account because I couldn’t figure out how to post pictures into my blog until recently. I like Flickr because it is really easy to upload lots of photos at once and it is easy to organise photos into sets.

What I don’t like about Flickr is that it is a very tedious process to add photos to my blogs especially if I have many to add. Flickr’s navigation is also rather unfriendly - I know I can do quite a lot with my Flickr photos if only I knew how. Can you believe I’ve had a Flickr account for over a year and I only recently discovered how to make photo badges? I’ve always known you could do it because I see badges on a lot of other blogs but I could never find the tool to do it on my Flickr account until I stumbled upon it by accident.

I recently discovered Webshots when my SIL showed me a really cool post about cakes at Techzo. I decided to give it a go to see how easy it was to use. Here is one of my posts with some photos using Webshots - it’s the first and only time I’ve used it and I’m still not sure if I like it better than Photobucket yet. The layout is neater than Photobucket for sure but that’s about all I can say about it for now.

Does anyone know of a user-friendly photo site that they’d like to recommend? I’m all ears - or rather, eyes…
