The Taste of Heaven

494082_durian.jpg

The king of fruits, the Durian has often been known as the fruit that “tastes like heaven and smells like hell”.  A rich source of vitamin B and C, the durian also contains fiber.  It is also believed to be a good food source for pregnant women, although I’m not too sure why.  At any rate, since I enjoyed eating this fruit, I didn’t really question the merits of eating it while pregnant.  Perhaps it was because I didn’t want the hubby to discover a reason why I shouldn’t eat the fruit since he can’t stand the smell of it.

They say that babies can develop a taste preference even while in the womb because they can taste flavours from the foods their mothers eat.  Since I consumed considerable quantities of durian during my pregnancy, I had a strong suspicion that Gavin might like durians.

Recently, my FIL bought some durians home and we tested my hypothesis.  It would appear in this instance that Gavin has again demonstrated his genetic similarities to Daddy because he rejected the durian after the first taste (much to Daddy’s relief since it now means that Mummy is the only one who likes durians so he won’t have to tolerate it in our house once we move into our new place).

Well, my MIL hasn’t given up her quest to educate Gavin in the art of durian consumption so I guess you can watch this space…

Feeling Perkier

After a rather slow start to the morning, it has been quite a good day today. I had a little bit of trouble getting out of bed this morning. I was supposed to visit my friend in town – the mother I mentioned in my previous post – and I remember thinking it was time to get up.

There was a lot of noise in the house and my bedroom door was ajar. I got up and closed the door then crawled back into bed. When I looked at the door again, it was still open ajar. At the back of my mind, I thought I perhaps I’m dreaming and that’s why the door won’t shut? Then I dreamt that I woke up and got up to close the door again. I remember feeling quite confused that the door refused to shut.

The next thing I remember is my room being filled with relatives making a lot of noise. I lost temper and screamed at all of them to leave.

I remembered thinking, “Now that wasn’t very nice.”

Then I thought, “Why did I get mad?”

Finally I remembered, “I’m pregnant. It must be the hormones…”

When I finally woke up, the house was empty and my bedroom door was open ajar just the way I had dreamt. Intriguing…

Anyway, after that rather unusual dream, the rest of the day seems to have gone quite well. I visited my friend V and her little girl C. C was a little out of sorts as well. Apparently the newspaper recycling man had woken her up before her normal designated time for waking up and the little sleeping beauty had gotten up on the wrong side of the bed.

Feeling quite energised, I was ready to brave the crowds in the SS2 square, where I visited my brother’s favourite fruit shop (the stall near Savemart) and bought myself two mangoes and half a pineapple. The pineapple was from Sarawak – the kind I like because it doesn’t shrivel your tongue and is most often sweet. I don’t know where the mangoes were from, but they looked pretty good.

The fruits at this place is perhaps a little pricey, but my brother did say he has never been disappointed by his purchases from this outlet.

The hubby had been complaining that my diet hasn’t been particularly healthy of late, so I figured I would make amends now that I was feeling better. My plan is to start eating more fruits, particularly the dark coloured ones because they provide more nutrients.

I also bought myself some walnut and raisin bread fresh from the bakery.

The mangoes tasted pretty good – especially after I chilled them in the fridge for a little while. The pineapple may not have been the sweetest I’d ever tasted, but it was still pretty good.

After chatting with the hubby on MSN, we decided to go for Italian tonight. PL and JV would be joining us. I’ve been having cravings ever since talking to HL on the phone last night and she mentioned MR had had some for dinner.

In fact, after reading PL’s diet blog, my taste buds seem to have awoken and I’ve been salivating at the thought of pasta ever since…
