Home Schooling – Week Two in Review

Since we’re into the early days of my homeschooling experience with Gavin, I thought I should keep up the practice of reviewing the activities we did in the previous week so that I may better learn from them and improve upon my “curriculum” for future weeks.  My original plan was to run a timetable with one main activity a day following the following subjects:

  • Sport
  • Music
  • Art
  • Cooking
  • Jungle gym/playground

With other miscellaneous subjects in between.

However, week two was no ordinary week, beginning with a public holiday on Monday.  Hubby was working so we took a trip up to the factory to visit him for lunch.  Then I had some errands to run on Tuesday so we ended up in Sunway Pyramid.  On Wednesday, I took Gavin on an excursion to the Planetarium and the KLCC art gallery.  After the disappointing visit to the Planetarium, I decided to take Gavin to the National Science Center on Thursday where we had lots of fun learning about science (I’ll write more about this in a later post with pictures to boot).  Then on Friday to Sunday, we were down in Singapore visiting my BFF, brother and SIL.

Upon reflection, it was an extremely busy week.  Though we didn’t cover the usual subjects, I thought it was pretty educational in its own right.  I guess that’s one of the benefits of homeschooling – being able to take things on the fly and turn each activity into its own unique learning experience.  I guess that’s the thing to remember regardless whether you’re a home schooling Mum or if you send your children to formal classes – the lessons don’t have to end when “class” is over, they can continue on the road in the car, while we’re out shopping, or during dinner at a restaurant.  Just about any experience is educational, the value of which depends on how you capitalise upon it.

Home Schooling – Cooking Class: French Toast

Since we never got around to attending that trial cooking class at Steps Ahead Learners, I decided to run my own “cooking class” at home.  Admitedly, I stole the idea from what little I had observed going on in the cooking class that was in progress when we first walked into Steps Ahead Learners.  The kids were making French Toast which I thought was a rather simple activity to reproduce at home.

I was also keen to try it because:

1. They say that kids who are actively involved in making their own food tend to eat it.

2. French Toast is something I have never tried on Gavin but sounded like something he might enjoy eating.

In the kitchen, I reckon French Toast is probably about as easy as it gets aside from boiling water, making rice in a rice cooker and cooking instant noodles.  All you need is:

  • an egg
  • a little bit of milk
  • a couple of pieces of bread

Whisk the egg in a bowl with a fork – your toddler will have a lot of fun doing this.  Add the milk and stir it in – again something a toddler can do fairly easily with a little bit of help.  Soak the bread in the mixture – ditto.  Then pan fry the bread in a non-stick pan or with a little butter – I brought Gavin out into the kitchen to watch while I cooked the French Toast.  Top it off with a little honey and you’re done!

To date, we’ve tried this activity twice.  Unfortunately, Gavin doesn’t like French Toast.  After two bites, he gave the rest to me.  I was encouraged the second time because it was Gavin who initiated the activity.  He told me he wanted to cook egg bread and I assumed it meant he wanted to eat it.  Unfortunately, his idea was to cook “egg bread” for Mummy to eat – very sweet and thoughtful but not what I had in mind.

I haven’t decided what to make for next week, but I found a pretty interesting recipe site with lots of simple recipes to choose from.  You might also find their French Toast recipe a little tastier than mine:

Crispy French Toast

6 bread slices
1/2 cup milk
2 eggs, beaten
1/4 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon oil

Beat eggs. Add milk, sugar, and cinnamon and mix together. Use a fork to dip each bread slice into the mixture one at a time. The key here is to dip it in the mixture long enough to soak well, but not too long so you avoid it breaking apart.

Cook bread on a hot griddle or skillet over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes on each side. Use a potato masher to gently press down so your French toast is crispy and golden in the center without burning the crust.

Serves 3.

Suggested toppings: pure maple syrup, powdered sugar, creamed honey, cream cheese.

Tell Me Thursday – Music Class

Here’s the scoop from the first ever music class I tried to organise for Gavin…

I started by collecting all his noise-making toys into a box and presenting it to him to try one by one.  If I could read Gavin’s mind, I think he must have thought, “Boring, Mummy,” because we were through all the music toys in 15 minutes.  I think I did manage to show him a thing or two on the xylophone music book I bought for him ages back and it was probably the only musical toy he was interested in for any length of time.  The drums and the maraccas held his attention for about a minute.

Okay, okay, I get the picture.  So I suck at given music classes.  And I thought it was going to be as easy as the art class

In the end, I gave up on the instruments and got Gavin engaged in some “singing”.  I haven’t been able to get a video because he gets all shy whenever he sees the camera, but these are some of the songs he likes to sing:

  • ABC (Signing Time version)
  • Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star
  • Do Your Ears Hang Low?
  • Boo Boo Choo Choo (from Thomas and Friends)
  • httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BO9SbU-aeUs

  • Thomas and Friends Theme Song
  • httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hw522GIskVc

  • Troublesome Trucks (from Thomas and Friends)
  • httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WylOOkGqDk

  • Little Einsteins Theme Song
  • httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-utKYYXVT7I

  • Little Einsteins “We’ve Got a Mission”
  • Little Einsteins End Credits
  • Silly Pizza Song (Signing Time)
  • httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_h1ZvzC03UA

  • Colours of the Rainbow (Signing Time)
  • httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnG-7w54LfE

  • Box of Crayons (Signing Time)
  • httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9VloMvf1Ls

Like most toddlers, he also refuses the perform just because we ask him to.  Singing is often very much up to his own mood – he might break out into song in the middle of a car ride to the shopping mall if he fancies it, but not when you ask him to sing.

After our impromptu singing, I put in his Thomas and Friends Sing Along VCD (at his request) and we sang and danced to the tracks.  I think he had the most fun doing this.  See the video on Wordless Wednesday – Music Class.

So our first music class was a resounding failure.  Never mind, I haven’t given up.  This Mummy still has a few tricks up her sleeve…

And if you’ve got any other suggestions, I’m all ears…
