Some time back I wrote about Brain Quest: Learning Made Fun after seeing it on sale at Borders Bookstore. The materials looked interesting and the concept sounded great. They also claimed:
32 Million Kids Can’t Be Wrong!
Brain Quest® is the #1 educational bestseller that makes learning fun. Loved by kids, trusted by parents, approved and used by teachers, BRAIN QUEST tests kids on stuff they need to know, when they need to know it.
But still, I wondered… Gavin can be quite unpredictable when it comes to new materials and he doesn’t always go with the majority. So I bought him the Brain Quest Preschool Cards as a trial to see how he’d take to it.
The verdict?
He loved it! The first time I brought the cards out, it was more to test the water to see how well he responded to it. I wasn’t intending for us to work on it for long. He liked it so much, he didn’t want to stop! He went through half the deck in one sitting – which, come to think of it, isn’t really that much since half of the deck are answer cards.
Although Gavin enjoyed the cards, I thought the preschool pack was a little too easy for him. We recently started on the Kindergarten pack and he seems to be coping fine with the cards. There are a few challenging questions that he needs a little help with but nothing completely beyond him. Well, aside from the ones dealing with US currency that even I don’t know the answers to.
I’ve been tempted to get the Workbooks but I was worried he wouldn’t want to do them. Now that he’s enjoying the activity cards, I might try one workbook and see how he goes with it. Since the Brain Quest cards have received the thumbs up, maybe a book with the Brain Quest logo will also pass through his rigid “like test” with flying colours.
