The World’s Greatest Chef in the Making?

June 25th, 2008

Gavin’s passion for cooking has been evident for some time. Yesterday, he took it to the next level when he stir-fried some veggies and onions.

Since Gavin demonstrates such a keen interest in cooking, perhaps we ought to help foster his budding aspirations to become a chef?  I did recommend to Daddy that perhaps it was time to get Gavin a masak masak set but my suggestion got vetoed.  Boys, according to Daddy, are supposed to learn how to destroy things, not cook.  Well, I think Gavin’s got plenty of experience in that department without us even trying (just take a look at the damage he’s done to his pop up books - which is precisely the reason why I now stick to board books and even those aren’t entirely Gavin proof as evidenced by the state of his preloved books).

Ah well, you can’t say I didn’t try…

Books for Confinement Cooking

June 3rd, 2007

Recently there was a request for more information on Chinese herbs to consume post-caesarian. I don’t know much on that area, but while I was pregnant, I did look up some information on confinement cooking and I found these titles at MPH bookstore:

The Essence of Confinement by Amy Wong

Recipes for Pregnancy & Confinement by Patsie Cheong

Chinese Pregnancy & Confinement Cookbook by Ng Siong Mui
My MIL used the book “Recipes for Pregnancy & Confinement” by Patsie Cheong because my aunt had a copy which she loaned to me. When I did a quick scan through the books at MPH, I found that the recipes seemed pretty similar to me.

Cuisine Musings

March 31st, 2007

Gavin’s very lucky to have HL as his aunt. HL’s a Cordon Bleu chef who worked in the kitchen of a fine French restaurant at Crown Entertainment Center in Melbourne. She has also won the Mark Thierry award and was personally mentored by the three star Michelin chef for a month in France.

It’s no surprise then that we are often treated to such lovely delights whenever she is back home. I’m sure Gavin will get to enjoy many of her treats when he is older.

Recently, HL started her own blog Cuisine Musings:

There’s only one entry there right now, but do stay tuned for more delicious recipes and pictures that will make your mouth dribble over your keyboard. I can personally assure you that those hot cross buns tasted as good as they look!

So bookmark her blog. Even if you’re not a chef, the pictures are definitely worth it!

Cooking for Baby

December 16th, 2006

Here are a couple of great recipes for a baby on solids from PL:

Rice with potatoes, tomatoes and carrots in anchovy broth

Mushroom, celery and mince chicken porridge

I also bought myself a Woman’s Weekly Cookbook for baby and toddler food so I could get more ideas. I’m probably a tad over eager since Gavin won’t be starting on solids until he’s six months, but I suppose it never hurts to be prepared… There are also some good sample menus in the book “Complete Baby & Child Care” by Dr Miriam Stoppard.
