Recently we entered the BrillKids Little Reader competition and came in as a runner up. After this experience I am really impressed by how the other parents managed to video their children reading. Getting Aristotle on camera is easier now that he’s older but Hercules is another story altogether. Working with a toddler startlet is hard work! Before you can even consider recording anything, you have to make sure that he’s in good spirits, not too tired, and in the mood to demonstrate his reading ability. If he loses the mood halfway, that’s your video recording done for the day. Then you have to make sure you’re in a position with good lighting and that there aren’t any other things around to distract the star of your show. Finally, you have to hide the camera or he’ll want to play with it instead of being in front of it! I’ve found that the window for Hercules to meet all these requirements is about 30 seconds – if we’re lucky – so I’m really grateful that we actually managed to record anything!
