When I was pregnant with Gareth, hubby and I used to joke about turning our baby into a professional sportsperson since all it takes is one grand slam and some savvy investment planning and you are pretty much set for life. We chose golf because of all the major sports, it was the least “damaging” and it had the longest life-span. With most other sports injuries are rife and by the time they’re 30, they’re approaching retirement.
Gavin was born and displayed no inclination for the sport other than to smack the balls into the water on Wii sports. Being fairly sedentary and rather bookish, we figured he was probably going to seek an academically inclined career. Nevertheless, I did briefly contemplate Kindergolf when he was little but gave up the idea when he was disinterested in attending classes. Now that he’s older and more open to the idea of extra-curricular activities, I thought it would be nice to revisit the idea of learning golf since it could be a sport that he and Daddy might enjoy playing together.
Since Kindergolf went MIA (the existing contact details on their SE Asia website for Malaysia is incorrect), I had to look elsewhere for classes for children and found two other groups that teach golf for children (if you know of others that are still in operation, please share them in the comments section – thank you!):

The general recommendation from Mr Golf, after a quick conversation with him over the phone, is to wait until Gavin is at least 5, perhaps even 6, before considering golf. This is purely because he feels such young children do not have the concentration span. Additionally, since the lessons take place at a driving range, it could potentially be hazardous for a young child without the sense to observe the necessary safety protocols. So it looks like we’ll be postponing Gavin’s trial lesson for golf until he’s a bit older.
The original idea for letting Gavin trial a variety of classes was so that he could:
- broaden his experiences
- add some variety in his daily routine (while he was on extended school holidays)
- discover his passion
The intention is to let him sign up for the one class that he enjoyed most out of all the trial classes he attended. Secondly, even if he decides he doesn’t like these activities now, he may come to enjoy them later in life when he encounters them again. Thirdly, it might also help him open up to the idea of trying new things.

They do? When I enquired (shortly after they opened) they said they don’t have a children’s program. Didn’t realise they finally added one.
