Extra-Curricular Activities: Z-Fencing

For his first trial of fencing, I took Gavin to Z-Fencing in Bangsar Shopping Complex. They offer 15 minute trial lessons for free and accept children as young as 4 years old. I didn’t get to observe much of what was happening because Gareth was tired so I took him out to nurse. From what little I could observe, it looked like a lot of theory and very little application. Then again it was only 15 minutes. Not surprisingly, Gavin wasn’t at all interested and it was possibly one of the first classes he rejected outright. Maybe I should have prepared him a little better before we went and showed him what exactly the sport of fencing is about.

When we came home, I looked up some fencing videos on Youtube and he was mildly interested in what was going on but he grew weary of it rather quickly  and moved on to other things before the video was over. Perhaps fencing is better suited to an older child or one who has watched and understood “Zorro” (see the classic scene from the old version of Zorro).

Anyway, here are the details if you’re interested to send your child for a trial class:

Address: Level 4, Bangsar Shopping Centre, 285 Jalan Maarof, 59000 Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Telephone: +603-2092 2510
Email: fence@zfencing.com
Website: www.zfencing.com

The following are the classes they have available:

The original idea for letting Gavin trial a variety of classes was so that he could:

  • broaden his experiences
  • add some variety in his daily routine (while he was on extended school holidays)
  • discover his passion

The intention is to let him sign up for the one class that he enjoyed most out of all the trial classes he attended. Secondly, even if he decides he doesn’t like these activities now, he may come to enjoy them later in life when he encounters them again. Thirdly, it might also help him open up to the idea of trying new things.

If you would like to follow us on this journey, this is the list of extra-curricular activities that have been planned so far (click the links to read about the activities we have tried so far; more links will be added as we get through the list):

If you know of any other activities that might be fun for a child to experience, please leave a comment – thank you!

  2. *blush* why thank you Raymond but I think every mother just wants the best for her children and does the best that she can. I am lucky to be able to stay home with my children. I cannot imagine if I had to work as well…
