Activities: Dinosaurs Alive at the National Science Center – Update

After our last disappointing visit to the Dinosaur exhibition at the Science Center, I wasn’t planning on a re-visit. Gavin, on the other hand, wanted to see the dinosaurs again so we made a second trip to the National Science Center. Although it was still pretty much the same variety of dinosaurs we saw the first time, I was glad to see that they cleaned up the exhibits a little (reduced the number of repeats) and added more information on each dinosaur (a banner with an interesting anecdote and a bunting with some quick facts about the dinosaur) – see T-Rex below for an example.

The room was darkened so I didn’t get very good pictures. There was also a background recording of “dinosaur roars” which has been known to frighten some of the younger children. Ironically, it was playing the first time we were there and Gavin had no trouble with it. This time, however, he suddenly became scared of the roaring noise. I’m wondering if watching Ice Age III – Dawn of the Dinosaurs (see the trailer) had something to do with the sudden change of heart?

Thankfully, he is still likes dinosaurs. He just doesn’t want to go back to the Science Center again as long as the dinosaurs are still there (which is basically until 31 December 2011). I’m not sure where the dinosaurs will be going next but based on the Dinosaurs Alive Tour, they didn’t put the full show on display (there is apparently also a dinotrain, fossil dig and other interactive activities, among other things).

Gavin chose the Parasaurolophus fossil model from the souvenir shop so that he could keep his Brachiosaurus fossil model company:

The entry prices have changed. It is now RM8 for adults and RM5 for children 4 years and above. Opening times are still the same (Mon-Sun 9am-5pm; closed on Fridays).

Just as an aside, anyone know how ankylosaurus became extinct? We read the fact bunting and it said ankylosaurus escaped the cretaceous tertiary extinction event. If that was the case, then what is the new speculation on when and how it died out? Gavin’s been asking me about it so we did an internet search which reports that Ankylosaurus became extinct along with all the other dinosaurs during the cretaceous tertiary extinction event.
