Activities: Muzium Negara – National Museum of Malaysia

With Gavin’s interest in dinosaurs on fire, I figured a trip to the museum would help to further his learning experience. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of assuming that there would be dinosaurs at the National Museum of Malaysia, otherwise known as Muzium Negara. In case you’re wondering, there aren’t any. Muzium Negara is a museum dedicated to the history of Malaysia. Don’t expect to see anything else there (unless they advertise a special exhibit). As a result, Gavin’s interest in the place fizzled out as quickly as a candle in a storm.

That said, the place wasn’t completely uninteresting. They have some lovely exhibits displaying some beautiful Malaysian historical artifacts. I wasn’t able to examine them in detail because Gavin was hurrying me along. About the only exhibit he stopped long enough to look at was the one with the holographic images, but by then Gareth was cranky and wanting to nurse so I couldn’t really stop to learn more about it.

I do wonder why they don’t have any dinosaur exhibits, though. If I recall correctly, even the museum in Melbourne had some exhibits on dinosaurs. But I digress. Here are the details in case you’re still interested to go.

Address: Jalan Damansara, 50566, Kuala Lumpur.
Telephone: +603-2267 1000/2282 6255 – General Line
Opening Hours: 8.00am – 6.00pm daily

If you want to visit specialty dinosaur museum, the Award Winning Dinosaur Museum is in Dorchester, England. There is also the National Dinosaur Museum in Canberra, Australia.

The other alternative is to watch your dinosaurs on TV. Jurassic CSI by National Geographic looks good, but there are a range of other dino DVDs available for purchase on the online shop from the Dino Museum in Dorchester. Anyone else know a good dinosaur DVD to recommend?

  1. Ah… shame. 🙁 Thanks anyway for sharing!

    Hi Shenli,

You are very cute…..:), of course NOT. Back then my time I didn’t see them having dinosaurs and I certainly don’t think there is any by now. But can still call up to inquire.

  3. Fz – does the Asian musuem at UM feature dinosaurs? Will definitely have to see if we can check it out. I just wish there was more on dinosaurs because Gavin is so interested in them right now.

  4. Mommy K – thanks. We were there recently. I saw the dinosaur exhibit. It was actually quite disappointing. Too many repeats of T-Rex. The herbivore section was slightly better. I thought it would have been better if they showed a greater variety of dinosaurs rather than repeating the same ones over and over. Other than the model replicas of the dinosaurs there wasn’t much else to it either. It would have been nice, though, if we could have purchased the DVD they were showing – I think that was the one that interested Gavin the most.

I thought the DinoTrek exhibition that was at the Petrosains center was smaller but better. At least they had more activities and more to learn from the visit.

The other quite of the same place is a small Asian Museum @ University Malaya, back then it was next to UM’s Law Faculty, but since the Law Faculty had been moved to a new building many many years ago, so I am not sure if the same museum still located at the same place, for this perhaps you may call up to check details.

Don’t know if you ever think of arranging trip(s) to explore Malaysia’s natural beaches, the one nearby is Morib, Selangor……again, since now we are in fasting month, so perhaps food is a problem……

Hi Shen Li, I think you should bring Gavin to the Science Center instead. I haven’t been there but my daughter has been there for their school trip.=) I still remember her telling me that there’s a dinosaur section there.
