I had my final visit to the doctor earlier today.
- Blood pressure: 110/70
- Weight gain: 1kg (woo hoo!)
- Urine: trace of protein and sugar (dang!)
- Baby’s weight: anywhere between 3.5-4.2kgs
Based on Dr Wong’s palpation, he estimates the baby’s size to be at least 3.5kgs. The scan’s estimate was 4.2kgs. On average, babies gain about 300 grams a week. Since Gareth was 3.4kgs at the last appointment, that would put him somewhere in the region of 4kgs – Gavin’s birth weight.
The trace of protein and sugar in the urine is not conclusive of gestational diabetes and usually an OGTT needs to be performed first. Given the current weight estimates for Gareth and the possibility of diabetes, Dr Wong felt it would be better if we got the induction process going sooner rather than later to reduce the risk of complications. And since we’re about to induce the baby, it seems rather pointless to do an OGTT.
Since the hospital’s practice is not to begin inductions over the weekend, I have been scheduled for my induction for next week. The procedure appears to be the same as what we went through with Gavin – pill insertion late the preceding night (to help open the cervix), evaluation the next morning and rupture membrane if all is going well. Being the second pregnancy, Dr Wong also said that it is usually about 50% quicker than the first pregnancy. Gavin’s delivery took about 36 hours, so I guess that means we can expect to have Gareth out in 18 hours.
Looks like it will be another couple more days before we “meet” Gareth. Dang, and there I was thinking I’d see him this weekend…

Hi, I’m also due for induction next week because my placenta is degenerating. Glad to know that it may be 50% quicker because my first induction 2 years back took forever too…
All the best.
