Toddler Behaviour: Devious Little Minds

I have always wanted Gavin to learn how to think outside the box.  I believe it is important that he learns how to deal with problems creatively and have always encouraged him to try to solve a problem even if he cannot find a solution immediately.  Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work.  More often than not, he would rather bring his problem to me and ask me to solve it for him.

And then he does something like this which makes me realise that the key to him thinking through a problem depends on just how important it is for him to find a solution.

Gavin went shopping today with my SIL2.  While they were browsing through a shop, he saw some wooden trains that fit on his Thomas and Friends railway track.  My SIL2 held up two trains and told him he could have only one.  This was what he said to her:

“If we buy only one, I can’t couple.  So how?”

Completely blown away by the deviousness of this little boy, my SIL2 ended up buying him both trains.

By “couple”, he is referring to linking the trains together with one another through their magnetic couplings.
