Gavin recommends Little Einsteins: The Great Photo Find – A Puzzling Adventure.

Little Einsteins Great Photo Find Puzzle Book

When I first picked up this book from MPH, my SIL asked, “Does baby want that or Mummy?”

Admittedly, I wasn’t entirely convinced that Gavin would like it either since it was all wrapped up and I couldn’t test it out on him first.  It looked interesting and it was a book about “Rocket” from Little Einsteins, which I knew Gavin has been rather keen on recently.  For RM59.90, it’s not exactly exorbitant, but it’s a little more than I would care to pay for a book that my son will only give a cursory glance at.

While I was still hesitating over it, my SIL asked Gavin if he wanted the book.  He gave us a resounding, “Yes,” and the decision was made.  My SIL bought the book for Gavin as his birthday present and we were both relieved to see that he was completely absorbed by it.

Although Gavin would heartily give his stamp of approval on this book, I have a couple of gripes about it:

We brought it into the car a few times as a distraction for Gavin while on the road and managed to lose one piece rather mysteriously into thin air.  It was a short trip and I know for a fact that all the pieces were present when we got into the car and that one was missing before we got out of the car at our destination.  Under the laws of physics, that would mean the missing piece is still somewhere inside the car, but try as we might, we haven’t been able to locate it.  While I realise that this is by no means the fault of the book, it isn’t exactly travel friendly when you have to worry about where all the extra pieces are all the time.

The other thing I noticed is that with most other books that Gavin enjoys, he normally pesters me to read them to him.  Not once with this book has he wanted to read the story.  He is usually too absorbed with pressing the buttons and fixing the puzzle pieces to be bothered with the story.  As an entertaining activity, I think the book meets all the requirements, however, in terms of functioning as a book to encourage a budding interest in reading, it hasn’t succeeded – at least not in Gavin’s case.

Yes, they are terrific. In fact, we have all the Little Einstein DVDs that are available here. My son loves them. I also think it is part of the reason why he loves music. He sings all the time and he recognises pieces of music he’s heard before in different contexts.
