Learn to Sing with Signing Time

Hello! I see you're new here. Welcome to Babylicious! You might like to subscribe to my RSS feed to get regular updates on what's new at Babylicious. Thanks for visiting!

This post is specially for my SIL whom I promised to post up some cute videos of Gavin singing (or at least attempting to).  In my pervious blog posts, I credited Signing Time for Gavin’s early speech development, now I should add that Signing Time has also helped him learn the alphabets.

Well, maybe he learned a bit of it from my alphabet power point flash cards, too.  Some time back when I put up a video of Gavin reciting the words from his alphabet flash cards, my SIL said he sounded like he’d just memorised them.  I decided to test him by swopping the slides around.  To my delight, he could still name all the slides even when they were out of order.  I guess we can safely conclude that he has learned these words.

He also recognises letters.  Like when we get into the lift, he’ll notice the “G” button for ground floor and say, “G Gorno.”  Yes, he still insists on saying “Gorno” instead of “Gordon” even though I’ve heard him pronounce “Gordon” correctly before.

Below is a video of Gavin singing the alphabet song.  If you listen to the part at the end, you’ll realise it is the Signing Time alphabet song because it goes “Now I know my ABC, next time won’t you sign with me” instead of “next time won’t you sing with me” -- so I’m pretty sure he learned it from Signing Time and not because I used to sing the alphabet song to him when he was a baby.  He missed a few letters here and there but I know he knows all the letters of the alphabet because each time he sings the song he skips different letters.

When my MIL heard Gavin singing the alphabet song, she was so delighted, she exclaimed to hubby in Hokkien, “Your son’s smarter than you!  You weren’t able to sing the alphabet song at this age!”  Hubby merely replied in the most dignified tone that he could muster, “Well, that’s evolution.  We’re supposed to get better and better with every generation.”  As much as I’d like to rag the hubby because he’s so proud of his IQ of 160, I have to agree that children these days seem a lot smarter than the children from our generation.

And here’s a video of Gavin singing a song from Signing Time called “Colours of the Rainbow”:

Just in case you’re wondering, here’s a clip of what the actual rainbow song sounds like:

He’s gotten the idea of the song even if the tune and some of the words are missing…

As far as my experience with Signing Time goes, I definitely feel these DVDs helped Gavin’s early speech development.
