Hypoallergenic Skin

Welcome back to Babylicious! Thanks for visiting again. If you've enjoyed reading my blog, subscribe to my RSS feed to get regular updates on what's new at Babylicious.

As an overly cautious Mum, I made sure that Gavin didn’t start solids until he reached six months old.  Even then I was always very cautious when introducing new foods to Gavin, making sure he had the same food for at least three days in a row without reaction before introducing the next new item.  All through his first year, Gavin did pretty well with all the food we introduced to him, having no reaction to any of them. Then, surprisingly, a couple of months back, Gavin broke out in spots.  It was all over his body – his chest, arms and legs.  They appeared quite suddenly, but they usually faded over the course of a day with some persistent spots taking a bit longer to go down.  Initially suspecting food, we eventually ruled out the possibility when the spots seemed unaffected by extra dietary precautions on our part.

For a while, I got a little worried, thinking it might have been bedbugs since I was just starting to put Gavin back to sleep in his cot beside our bed.  Since he hadn’t been sleeping in his cot for a while (and it was becoming a bit of a storage bed for extra pillows and Gavin’s toys), I thought it had become infested.  That was, until I read up a little more about bedbugs and how they come about, and realised that it was unlikely that Gavin’s bed was infested.

My FIL probably hit the nail on the head when he suggested it might be a sensitivity to the grass or something in the garden because it was around about the time Gavin started learning to walk.  He was making regular trips out to the garden to practice his newly developed walking skills and to break in his new shoes.  Since he was usually lightly clothed – wearing nothing but a t-shirt and diapers, he had a lot of exposed skin to sensitise.

Thought most of the spots eventually disappeared on their own, we treated the more stubborn ones with some calamine lotion, which also had the beneficial effect of being soothing. They were completely gone about a week later with no further explanation as to what might have been the original cause.  Since then, Gavin has been out and about in the garden without effect, so this puzzling mystery may never be solved.

About the only thing we learned from the whole experience is that Gavin also has my skin – which is, sadly, the bad skin.  Hypoallergenic, hypersensitive, and easily marked, I fear his beautiful baby skin may not remain that way as he grows older.
