Bumbo Chair Recall

It’s always good to keep tabs on the media when you’ve got little ones.  With so many product recalls, warnings, etc. you’ll never know when it involves one of the products you are currently using on your baby.  Recently, I wrote about the Croc shoes accidents – thankfully Gavin isn’t old enough to walk yet, although I’m pretty sure I would never have bought him such an ugly shoe to wear.  Then there was the Mattel toys’ incident with the lead paints and the small magnets.

But I digress…  A fairly recent news release from CPSC (the US Consumer Product Safety Commission) highlighted problems with a commonly used baby seat – the Bumbo Chair.

Serious Head Injuries Prompt Recall of Bumbo Baby Sitter Seats – New Warnings and Instructions to Be Provided To Consumers.

To be fair, the manufacturers of the Bumbo chair have already given adequate warning with a sticker stating: “WARNING” – “Never use on a raised surface. Never use as a car seat or bath seat. Designed for floor level use only. Never leave your baby unattended as the seat is not designed to be totally restrictive and may not prevent release of your baby in the event of vigorous movement.”

Although I have used the Bumbo chair on a raised surface, it has usually only been at times when I am present to monitor him.  I would still add that even in the presence of an adult, it is still quite dangerous to use the Bumbo on a raised surface.  There have been a couple of incidences where Gavin was seated in his Bumbo in between the hubby and me and the little tyke grabbed the edge of a table and nearly toppled his chair over.

The safest place for the Bumbo is still the floor.  It is designed to help keep babies in the seated position when they aren’t quite able to sit unsupported.  I feel that once babies are able to seat unsupported, they have effectively out-grown the use of the Bumbo.  The better method for securing baby in a safe place is in a seat they can’t get out of, or a playpen (although every parent should probably be aware that even those cannot prevent the more industrious babies from escaping).
