Milestone Alert - Pulling Up

September 29th, 2007

Gavin pulled himself up to a standing position today without my assistance.  He was using the new Leapfrog Walk-a-long toy that my mother bought for him.  Unfortunately, I didn’t catch the momentus event on camera, but I do have a photo of him playing with his Walk-a-long toy in Melbourne:

It never ceases to amaze me how quickly babies pick up new tricks.  He’ll be struggling and struggling on a problem for the longest time and then suddenly, without warning, he’ll do it on his own.  Now I know why they say you can’t take your eyes off them for even the shortest moment at this age because you’ll never know when they suddenly gain that extra mobility and fall off the bed or wherever they are.

Nowadays, I don’t even dare to leave Gavin in the bumbo on the benchtop because he’s managed to wiggle out of the bumbo on the odd occasion.

Gavin still isn’t really crawling, but he’s trying.  He’s also made some progress taking a few steps using the Walk-a-long (with my assistance).  I’ve read that some babies bypass the crawling phase and go straight to walking.  There is an added advantage to that (if you can call it an advantage) - they learn to walk earlier.  Babies who crawl sometimes get delayed in learning to walk because they find it easier to zip around on all fours than to go through the tedious process of learning to walk on two feet.
