Gavin has lots to smile about because he had his last appointment to see Dr Lam before his one year old birthday last Thursday. Dr Lam said that since he has always been so fit and healthy at every appointment, he didn’t think it was necessary to have the 9 month follow up.
Weighing in a 9.4kgs, Gavin’s weight gain appears to be slowing down. He took his final pneumococcal jab (save the booster shot at 1 year) like a seasoned warrior. A small cry escaped his lips and he was back to the happy chirpy baby we all know and love. He even wanted to take home Dr Lam’s rattle.
Final checks and notes from Dr Lam:
On Gavin’s morbid fascination with his penis - this is apparently very normal even if what he happens to be doing looks painful. Unless he cries during urination or when he “scratches” his penis, it’s fine. An exhibit of discomfort during urination is a sign that a urinary tract infection may be present. Since Gavin seems rather happy when he pulls his penis, I presume all’s well.
On old Chinese wives tales - it’s okay to make a baby stand up or sit up even before they have learned to do it by themselves. Contrary to the old beliefs, doing so won’t make your baby bow-legged (from standing) or hunch (from sitting). So there you go - the next time an aunty or uncle tells you for for sitting your baby up while he’s still wobbly or making him stand when his legs are fully weight-bearing yet, you know the truth.
What will make your baby bow-legged is the use of walkers. I kinda got the sense that paediatricians don’t like walkers, which is no problem with me - it just means one less thing I need to buy for Gavin.
