Baby Sign Language Classes

After my last post on Baby Sign Language, I’ve received some very useful feedback from some other Mummies providing details of classes and resources that they have heard about and used.  I thought I would consolidate them all here.

PS sent me the following two links which are websites that teach sign language:

American Sign Language Browser - You’ll need to download Quicktime to watch the clips.  This site teaches general signing that is not specifically tailored for babies.  The good thing about this site is that the videos are fairly quick to load up.

Baby Hands Production: Dictionary of Signs - You’ll need Windows Media Player to watch the movies on this website.  I don’t know if it is just my connection, but it took so long to load the video that I gave up waiting.  They also sell educational DVDs but the range is quite limited compared to Signing Times

Baby Signs - founded by Drs Acredolo and Goodwyn.  I picked up one of their brochures when the hubby and I were walking through The Curve.  Currently they only offer classes to parents who want to teach sign language to their children.  The parent-child classes are not available at present.  Personally I think it would have been better if they had started with the parent-child classes first.  Baby Signs also offers a range of products from books on baby sign language to DVDs and signing cards.

Selangor Institute of Music – offers the Kindermusik program which recently launched a sign and sing class that teaches sign language to babies.  They are located in Petaling Jaya near Rothman’s round-a-bout.

Kidz Talent - also offers the Kindermusik program.  They are located in Ikano.

I have not tried any of these classes so I can’t offer any feedback although I welcome any other Mums who have tried them to comment.

Tomorrow, I’ll be seeing E at Fitfor2 and she’ll be passing me the Signing Times DVDs.  Since I’ve already bought those DVDs, let’s just see how they go.  I’ll be writing a review in a couple of weeks so stay tuned.

  1. Hello

    Very interesting information! Thanks!

    G’night

  2. You’re welcome!

  3. hiutopor – cool nickname!

  4. Our girl watching baby signing time DVDs since she is 18 months old (a bit late), she love it and improved plenty vocabs, more understanding when we talk to her. We seldom see her throwing tantrum unless she is hungry / tired.

I have recommended the DVDs to several friends.

  5. Yes, I found the DVDs were really helpful with helping Gavin expand his vocab as well. We continued to watch them even after he could speak and no longer needed to sign. He’s been talking a lot for a child his age and is often complimented for being so well spoken.

These days, he still signs on occasion – his favourite colour, favourite number, “I love you”. It’s a good “second” language.

  6. last week when we went to Singapore for holiday, we are managed to purchase Sign Language Series Two, we bought 4 pcs @ SG$29.90 each. The service is very good, they even delivered the DVDs to the hotel that we stayed.

They are not only selling Sign Language DVDs, they also selling other educational items too. Hope u like it too.

Thanks for all your well-sourced bringing up children info….do help me a lots, I am first time mum and reading lots of books in order to help me understanding more on motherhood. I’m a bit lucky is that my hubby have 3 children from his ex-marriage, so he have plenty experience to guide me, more practical rather than theory from book.

    Cheers,
    J

  7. Thanks for the link, Jo. Wish I’d discovered them earlier. I’m always on the lookout for good educational materials. I believe early childhood development is so important.

I’m glad the information has helped you. I’m a first time Mum, too, but not so lucky in the experience department so have had to rely on books and personal trial and error.
