Screaming During Labour

April 25th, 2007

I was watching an episode of Grey’s Anatomy with my SIL recently and in one of the scenes a woman in second stage labour was screaming as she pushed. I never really thought much about that before but now that I’ve had the experience of going through labour, I wonder why women on TV all scream when they push.

When I was in labour, I remember the hubby encouraging me to scream so I could push harder. The funny thing was that when I screamed, I found myself unable to push because it was like all my energy was being diverted to my mouth. Of interesting note is that it was easier for me to push if I clamped my mouth shut. When I told the hubby that I found it easier to push if I didn’t scream, the nurse agreed with me.

So is it just me or do other Moms who’ve had natural deliveries feel the same? Because based on my sole experience, it seems to me that hollywood has once again given us the false impression that every woman screams during labour.

I screamed from 2nd stage labour onwards purely due to the blinding pain of the contractions. The doctor and nurses kept yelling at me to stop, for the reason you discovered yourself. I immediately obeyed - for 10 seconds at a time.

Maybe Hollywood is in cohorts with whoever it is who gets paid to administer epidurals? :p

Haha, I wouldn’t be surprised. When we went for the hospital lecture on pain management, the anaesthetist kept showing us pictures of women with pain-contorted faces. I guess she was just doing her selling pitch to us that we should get the epidural :op
