Pregnancy Weight Gain

It’s time to see the doctor again. I confess I’ve been very bad and have completely released all restraints. I’m now 20kgs over my prepregnancy weight - I think I must have gained about 2kgs since my last check-up last week! I think the doc will definitely have some comments for me today…

I found this pregnancy weight gain calculator from Baby Center which states that an appropriate amount of weight gain for me should fall somewhere between 11.5kg - 16kg. Oops…

On the upside, Baby Center states the following on pregnancy weight gain which should bring some relief:

“Much of the weight you’ve been accumulating will be gone pretty soon after you give birth. Mothers usually lose one-half of their pregnancy weight gain in the first six weeks postpartum. The baby accounts for about 7.5 pounds (more or less), and the amniotic fluid, placenta, and extra body fluids and blood in your body add up to another 8 to 12 pounds. Also, your uterus and breasts have gotten bigger, adding up to 4 to 6 pounds. Remember, it took nine months to put on the weight, and it can take just as long or longer for all of it to come off.”

I’ve always had this idea that women generally tend to look at pregnancy as the one time in their lives that they can really let loose on the diet and have a gorge fest. Somehow, I’ve felt quite the opposite. I feel a little guilty indulging and finding that I’m almost always over my weight gain limit every time I visit the doctor.

The other reason I’m so paranoid about the weight gain is because of its correlation to the baby’s birth size. They say that one of the determinants for a baby’s birth size is how much weight the mother gains during pregnancy. Well, I guess it’s a little too late to do anything about the weight gain now - it’s a little like crying over spilt milk, isn’t it? Still I do hope that the doctor might have made a mistake on his prediction of a 4-4.5kg baby.
