Recently there was an article in the papers about Civil workers requesting a 40% increase in pay. Now I didn’t really have any issues in their request for a pay raise until I went to collect my IC (Malaysian identity card) yesterday.
Some time back, my wallet was pick-pocketed from my bag so I lost my IC along with everything else that was in my wallet. When I went to apply for a new IC, I waited in line like everyone else only to discover when I was called up to the counter that because I was pregnant, I could have just gone to a special counter where I would have been attended to immediately. Well, it would have been nice if they had posted a bigger sign or if someone had told me this earlier since I was quite evidently pregnant when I submitted my documents for processing.
After calling ahead to enquire if my IC was ready, I went to pick it up yesterday. Wiser the second time, I went straight to the special counter only to be told that I was only allowed to use this counter if I were submitting documents. Instead, I was directed to stand in line for a queue number. How thoughtful for them – I’m eight months pregnant and they want me to stand in line. On top that, after I finally got my queue number, I still had to wait to pick a card that had been ready for two weeks! The whole process to collect my IC took me some three quarters of an hour.
Now the irony of all this is that the Civil workers are asking for a 40% pay raise because they feel they have “improved” their efficiency. I don’t know if I’m being unreasonable, but I don’t think having to wait 45 minutes to collect a card that is ready is considered “efficient”.
