They say that you should put on between 12-18kgs for the duration of the pregancy. Some women may find it difficult to put on weight in the first trimester due to “morning sickness”, but usually this isn’t a problem so long as you do put on the weight from the second trimester onwards.
So the question is: how much weight and when?
In “What to Expect When You’re Expecting“, they suggest about a pound a week.
According to “Pregnancy, Birth & Family Planning“, by Lichtan, Simpson and Rosenfield, normal weight gain for the first trimester is about 2-5lbs (approx. 1-2.5kgs). From the second trimester onwards, it should be about half a kilo a week.
The Baby Center states that based on my height and pre-pregnant weight, I should gain an estimated 30lbs for the duration of the pregnancy, averaging about 4lbs every month in the last two trimesters.
Everyone seems to have different ideas about gaining weight during pregnancy, but March of Dimes state that gaining too much or too little weight each have their own set of problems. For instance, gaining too little weight can mean having a small baby (under 5lbs), while gaining too much weight can lead to a premature baby or a baby that is large (causing complications during birth). Excessive weight gain can have health implications on the mother as well, as she may develop conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and varicose veins.
In my case, I’m in my 5-6th week of pregnancy and I’ve gained 2kgs. I noticed yesterday that my pants are starting to get tight – not just at the waist, but my thighs as well. I am even starting to trade in my jeans for my guttered track-pants. My bras are suffocating me and even my sports bras bring on the sensation of nausea because of the pressure of the elastic around my torso.
I think it’s time to shop for a more comfortable wardrobe…
